What Are Dental Sealants?

Protecting Smiles with Dental Sealants

  • Prevents tooth decay: Studies have demonstrated that dental sealants can decrease the likelihood of cavities by 80% after 2 years and by 50% after 4 years.
  • Durable Protection: With proper maintenance, sealants can be easily replaced and have the potential to remain in the mouth for up to 9 years.
  • Great for children: Children without sealants on their teeth are three times more likely to get cavities than those with sealants.

When you come in for your dental sealant procedure at our office in Greenville, here's what you can anticipate

A sealant is similar to a tiny plastic filling, and numbing is usually unnecessary because tooth enamel does not have nerves. Initially, we will assess the tooth or teeth needing sealing and remove any decay if needed. Then, we will use a solution to enhance the bond between the sealant material and your tooth surface. Finally, we will carefully apply the sealant by painting it onto the tooth and using a special curing light if necessary. And that's all there is to it!
