Improve your health by restoring the integrity of your teeth

A dental filling is a material used to repair a tooth damaged by decay, restoring its appearance and function. Cavities, caused by bacterial acids, can worsen if left untreated, leading to further damage and potential tooth loss. Fillings stop the decay process, saving the tooth and preventing future discomfort and expense.

While it may seem counterintuitive to drill a hole for a filling, it is necessary to remove the decay and restore the tooth. Unlike other parts of the body, teeth cannot heal themselves, so the decay must be removed to prevent further damage. Though the drilling may temporarily make the hole larger, it is essential for the long-term health of the tooth.

The dental filling procedure is a common and straightforward treatment. To begin, we may administer a local anesthetic to numb the area, depending on the size of the filling. If you have any concerns about discomfort, please don't hesitate to discuss this with the dentist.

The decay will be removed using a drill, and the tooth may be shaped to ensure a proper fit for the filling. The dentist may also use an acid gel to prepare the tooth for better adhesion of the filling material. If resin is used, a special light may be used to harden it. Finally, the tooth will be polished to a smooth and shiny finish.

There are various materials that can be used for fillings, including gold, silver, composite resin, and porcelain. The choice of material will depend on the condition of your tooth, your aesthetic preferences, and your budget. At our practice, we prefer to use tooth-colored materials such as composite resin or porcelain for a natural appearance. These materials are durable and can be used on both front and back teeth, depending on the location and extent of decay. Ultimately, the decision on which material to use will be made through a discussion between you and the dentist.
